TOPIC: Posting a new hike

Posting a new hike 6 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 0
I picked up a GPSr (Delorme PN-40) shortly after the holidays and would love to contribute some new hikes to the current listing. When I click "submit a hike" however, I see no place to upload a GPX or similar type file. How is the trail drawn on the map otherwise? Am I just missing it? Thanks,
-Matt

I poked around a bit and haven't tested it, but it is likely using the embed map function from Google maps.

Also you may need to use another program to import a gpx file into Google Maps. (See discussion below):

www.google.com/support/forum/p/maps/thre...3531f11e1b&hl=en

But I am not sure how it would work, either, in context of the bracketed style [ ] html.

I am not an admin, but I see the potential of this site as place where we can share information, since it probably gets a lot of hits.

I will be testing it soon and will post here if I have any progress. If you do, please post here, too.

Thanks,

Derek

OK, after several tries, it appears that you can edit the HTML source in the "Trail Details" section of the form on the Submit a Hike. If you can get KML into Google Maps, you can "Paste HTML to embed in website" into that are to embed the map.

I haven't been able to test it yet, but will be doing so over the next couple of weeks.

If you need any more details, please let me know.

This does not appear to work in Chrome, but does work in IE.

Thanks,

Derek

Thanks for looking into it Derek. I will have to play around with that. One downside that I see to that method is that users will not be able to download a track from this website to use on their personal GPSr. That is one of the benefits of sites like everytrail, gpsies, etc.
